Impurities that Exist in Hemp Products

Before getting into the concept of high-purity cannabinoid extractions, it’s important to understand what purity reflects when it comes to the hemp market.  To do this, first we need to have a good idea of the different kinds of impurities that can exist in a hemp product.

The process of purification simply means that a technique is used to remove impurities that are not desired in the end product.  Various purification methods exist, and when it comes to delta 8 and delta 10, it usually involves a distillation process, which applies steam distillation to the material until all of the unwanted compounds evaporate, leaving behind only the compound desired.

#1: Unwanted Plant Material

The hemp plant naturally boasts a seemingly infinite amount of individual chemical compounds, and not all of them are considered desirable.  For instance, hemp contains chlorophyll, a compound that gives plants their color and structure.  However, chlorophyll doesn’t enhance our ability to enjoy delta 8 or delta 10, so a purification process effectively removes the chlorophyll, which is why delta-8 and delta-10 extracts are not green.

#2: Impurities from the Extraction Process

Sometimes, impurities come from the extraction process, which is particularly the case when making delta 8 concentrates.  Producing certain types of concentrates, like wax and shatter, requires the use of butane as a solvent.  But, the butane must then be removed from the end of product since it’s not desirable to inhale.  So, a purification process, usually involving a vacuum-based method, purifies the product by eliminating, along with other undesirable compounds, the butane solvent from the end product.

#3: Impurities from the Soil

Some impurities come from the soil in which the plant was grown.  Examples include heavy metals and pesticides, which can be harmful in large doses.  These compounds are effectively eliminated during the purification process.

When making isolates and distillates, such as CBD isolate or delta 8 distillate, the other compounds in the plant are deemed undesirable even though they are not inherently “bad.”  For instance, when making a delta 8 distillate, we want the terpenes to be removed in order to have a pure delta 8 product, despite the fact that terpenes are considered desirable compounds in the general sense.

Why Then Does the Overall Purity Level of Delta 8 THC and Delta 10 THC Matter?

High-purity delta 8 and delta 10 are becoming standard, and this means that we can enjoy cleaner forms of these cannabinoids than ever before, not to mention high-potency forms as well.

Purification can play a role in the safety of a THC hemp product.  Some impurities can cause harm when they accumulate in the body over time, such as heavy metals and pesticides found in the soil around the hemp plant.

Of course, when it comes to creating pure delta 8 or delta 10 extracts, the purity level plays a role in the potency of the product.  The purer the cannabinoid extract is, the higher the potency as there are no other compounds that are diluting the overall extract.

Yes, purity also affects flavor.  For instance, we said earlier that chlorophyll is removed during the purification process.  Chlorophyll has a bitter plant-like taste that would strongly impact the taste of a delta 8 or delta 10 extract.

Delta 8 and delta 10 extracts are created using steam distillation, which we touched upon earlier.  The process exposes the plant material to varying degrees of pressurized steam, with each degree exposing the plant to a specific boiling point that results in the evaporation of individual compounds, until all that is left behind is the purified delta-8 or delta-10 cannabinoid.

Over time, distillation processes have evolved quite a bit, to make the purification process even more thorough.  Therefore, high-purity delta 8 and delta 10 are simply the purest forms of the cannabinoids that you can find on the market.  

Typically, a high-purity delta-8 or delta-10 distillate is considered to be a distillate with a 99% or higher purity level.  This means that the composition of the distillate is 99% delta 8 or delta 10.  What remains is typically certain terpenes that cannot be removed or else each delta would also be compromised.

A high-purity delta 8 THC or delta 10 THC extract is flavorless, odorless, and colorless, which comes from the fact that cannabinoids inherently lack flavor, aroma, and color properties.  In other words, if your distillate has a taste, smell or color, it’s not actually high-purity.
