Most of us pay enough of a hefty price for weed to really want to make sure that we enjoy every last bit. But, if you’re burning your flower each time you go in for a nice smoke or vaping session, then you’re throwing money down the drain, and missing out on all that cannabis has to offer.
While burning your weed is a common enough rookie mistake, the good news is that there are some clear ways to prevent this from happening so that you don’t have to waste your precious supply any longer.

How to Know Your Weed is Burnt
If your particular methods mean that you’re always burning your weed, you may not even realize that it is burnt, and think that what you’re experiencing is normal. So, how do you know? Well, the first dead giveaway is a burnt flavor. Sure, when we’re applying fire to raw plant material, you’re going to get a little bit of ash. But, it isn’t normal to taste a strong burnt flavor when you inhale.
Burnt flower also feels way harsher when you inhale. It is natural to get a little irritation from time to time when you smoke, and also end up coughing. But, the irritation shouldn’t be so harsh that it’s intolerable.
Besides all of that, burnt flower is a waste of a session. If the cannabinoids and terpenes in your weed burn, then they’re no longer effective, so you’re just not going to get good results out of smoking or vaping it.
What to Do to Avoid Burning Your Flower
You’re not gonna enjoy your weed if you are letting it get burnt. Once those compounds exceed a certain temperature, they’re destroyed forever, and there is no coming back. So, here’s what can be done to possibly avoid this situation from happening during your sessions.
Tip #1: Use the Right Type of Device
First off, you need to make sure you’re using the appropriate method for your flower. For example, using your flower with a dab rig or dab pen is going to burn it, since dab rigs are meant for concentrates which require much higher temperatures to melt. And, putting your flower in an oil vaporizer is also going to result in burning, since raw plant material is not meant to make contact with the hot coil.
Tip #2: If You’re Vaping Flower, Watch Those Settings
If you’re using a flower vaporizer, it’s important to understand the settings. A huge mistake is vaping flower at the highest output setting possible, thinking that the stronger the puffs, the better. It’s always better to start with the lowest setting and only go up an increment each time until you find your sweet spot. Flower can burn if you have the wattage, temperature or voltage set too high.
Tip #3: Make Sure Your Flower Isn’t Dried Out
Another issue could be that your flower is too dry. Failing to store it properly will make it dehydrated, and while you don’t want your flower to be too moist, you also don’t want it to be dry to the point that it crumbles. Dry flower is going to burn since there’s no moisture in there to act as a nice buffer between the herb and the heat. If your flower does seem dry to you, stick it in an airtight container with either a damp paper towel or a leaf of lettuce – either will transfer the right amount of moisture back into your buds.
After about 6 months, flower does expire, which means that no matter how well you store it, it’s likely unusable. Its compounds will have broken down, and it will likely be so dry that restoring its moisture level is virtually impossible.
Tip #4: Buy Top-Shelf Quality Buds
It could be that you’re buying flower from a source that delivers low-quality THC product. Either it’s too dry, or it was grown under the wrong conditions, which affect its consistency. Only buy your buds from trusted sources to know that what you’re getting is top-shelf quality. Otherwise, you’re likely to be disappointed not only with how it burns, but its effects and flavor as well.
Tip #5: Clean Your Equipment
It’s possible that your flower isn’t actually burnt, but your equipment is dirty, and what you’re inhaling is old ash and resin that’s mixing in with the smoke or vapor. The importance to cleaning your device weekly at least, whether that be a pipe or a vaporizer, cannot be stated enough. This means thoroughly taking the device apart and cleaning each component with a solution of warm water, salt, and isopropyl alcohol.
Finally, Say Goodbye to Bad Flavor and Wasted Flower!
Time to take both your equipment and your bud supplier more seriously, and make sure that you’re smoking or vaping it in a way that’s more thoughtful. Make a real effort to adjust your settings if you’re using a vaporizer, and when your flower isn’t in use, store it in an airtight container to keep it fresh for as long as possible. Besides, you did spend your hard earned money on this hobby after all.
