How Do Cannabinoids Work?

To know how hexahydrocannabiphorol works, we have to look at the relationship that all cannabinoids share with the endocannabinoid system (ECS).  The ECS is a system found in every mammal, which has the job of using cannabinoids to regulate individual processes of the body, with the overarching goal of bringing us into homeostasis.  

Throughout the body, there are cannabinoid receptors, each receptor capable of regulating a specific process of the body, whether it be our sleep cycle, our mood, our inflammation levels, our pain tolerance, etc.  Cannabinoid receptors are split up into two categories: CB1 receptors, located in the nervous system, and CB2 receptors, located mostly in the nervous system, digestive system and immune systems.  Some cannabinoids work more strongly with CB1 receptors, some work more strongly with CB2 receptors, and some work with both in a more balanced way.

When a cannabinoid like HHC-P absorbs into our body, it attaches to specific cannabinoid receptors, and this process enables the cannabinoid receptors to regulate specific processes that affect our body and mind.  At the same time, specific cannabinoid receptors in the brain use cannabinoids to produce a psychoactive effect, and how strongly a particular cannabinoid attaches to those receptors determines the strength of the high, which explains why some cannabinoids are far more intoxicating than others.  

There are over 100 distinctive cannabinoids in the hemp plant, and each one plays a specific role in interacting with the endocannabinoid system, which is why each cannabinoid ultimately feels and behaves differently.  This is why getting high off of delta 8 can feel so different from getting high off of THC-P, for example.  

Theoretically, each time we consume a cannabinoid, we’re bringing our bodies closer to homeostasis, although it’s safe to say that the majority of people who take psychoactive cannabinoids are more interested in its immediate intoxicating effects, which are undeniably enjoyable and can be extremely valuable to maintaining our mood, physical comfort levels and more on a daily basis.  

How Does HHC-P Work with the Endocannabinoid System?

Hexahydrocannabiphorol (HHC-P) is actually the hydrogenated form of THC-P, meaning that it’s THC-P with an added hydrogen atom, which greatly enhances its chemical stability while changing its chemical properties to increase its bioavailability.  This certainly affects its relationship to the endocannabinoid system, thus largely determining how it works once absorbed into the body.  But, it’s also a brand new cannabinoid, which means that we don’t know yet exactly how it interacts with cannabinoid receptors to produce its effects. 


We know that THC-P, its non-hydrogenated predecessor cannabinoid, acts on CB1 receptors in the brain at about 31x the rate of delta 9 THC, which is why it’s so intoxicating.  It’s safe to assume that HHC-P products has a similar relationship to these CB1 receptors, thus explaining why its high is comparably potent.

What Effects Can HHC-P Offer?

As we said, HHC-P is so new that we know next to nothing about it because of a lack of scientific research.  It’s a semi-synthesized cannabinoid, meaning that it doesn’t occur naturally in hemp, but is the result of chemically modifying HHC (hexahydrocannabinol), which does exist in the hemp plant.

HHC-P’s high is likely close to that of THC-P, because HHC-P is just the hydrogenated form of THC-P, with the addition of a carbon atom.  The high is likely to be intensely euphoric, just like THC-P’s, with a body high that’s great for tight muscles in the body.
