15 Best Movies to Watch When You’re High | 2024

#1: Up in Smoke

It’s hard to disregard the OG stoner film, Up in Smoke, which was Cheech and Chong’s masterpiece released in 1978.  Their first film turned them into icons overnight and earned over $104 million in box office sales – an impressive feat to say the least, considering they were virtually nobodies before.

#2: Pineapple Express

With Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, James Franco, Ed Begley Jr. and other big names, Pineapple Express stole the spotlight with an imaginative and hilarious story revolving around the strain that inspired the film’s name.  This buddy comedy takes its main characters on a journey into the wild due to a deal gone wrong, and also is one of the absolute finest of its genre.

Half Baked was released in 1998, and to this day, it’s one of the all-time greats of its kind.  Dave Chappelle’s creation is about 3 friends who come across a renegade strain, leading to an absolutely dizzying plotline complete with twists and turns that leave you laughing so hard that you’ll be crying.  Any Chappelle fan will want to get their hands on this one, and likely watch it again and again.

Yet another stoner comedy is Friday, from 1995, starring Chris Tucker and Ice Cube.  To this day, it’s an extremely quotable film that’s referenced more than you probably realize, and beyond its hilarious plotline, it is regarded as one of the only 90s films to be set in the hood while portraying the setting positively.

The Matrix universe has expanded since its first installment was released in 1999, but many will tell you that the first remains the best to this day.  Keanu Reeves, who already resonates with those who love getting high, stars in this mind-bending, consciousness-expanding cyberpunk spectacle that will have you questioning the nature of reality as it asks some compelling questions about our perception of what’s real.

Fight Club, with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, was another film released in 1999 that is incredibly popular to this day, and a great choice for watching while high.  The philosophical undertones, the plot twists and the incredible visuals all come together to keep your eyes glued to the screen while those cannabinoids elevate your curiosity and imagination.

Released in 2010, Inception is a thriller that was a huge blockbuster when it was released.  Starting Leonardo DiCaprio, the film shows a man with the unique gift to steal secrets from the subconscious minds of others, using them as a commodity.  From there, he comes up with the idea of implanting people’s minds with new ideas.  Its imaginative plotline will blow your mind when you’re nice and toasty off of some cannabinoids.

In 1993, Quentin Tarantino released True Romance, starring Patricia Arquette and Christian Slater as star-crossed lovers of a whole new variety.  Tarantino films are extremely watchable while high overall, thanks to his engaging dialog and attention to detail, but Brad Pitt makes this film as he offers a chef’s-kiss-worthy comedic portrayal of the ultimate stoner.

Released just this year, The Northman, starring Alexander Skarsgard and directed by Robert Eggers of The VVitch and Lighthouse fame, is a film that you simply must see while you’re high.  It’s an epic yet avant garde portrayal of the Viking folktale that inspired Hamlet, and its visuals, score, cinematography and just about everything are compelling beyond words.  There’s a whole lot of trippiness in the film to dazzle your cannabinoid-infused brain thanks to the use of a certain psychedelic throughout the film, which, as it turns out, is completely true to the old-world Viking rituals.

1993’s Dazed and Confused is a teen comedy that takes place in 1976, and stars a host of leading actors like Ben Affleck, Adam Goldberg, Matthew McConaughey and Parker Posey.  A celebrated stoner film, it gives you all of those warm and fuzzy feelings as it brings you back to being a high school student yourself.

One of the original Disney animation films, Fantasia is a celebrated classic with some unintentionally (or maybe intentionally) trippy visuals and musical scores.  It’s a spectacle of swirling colors and patterns, with classical music punctuating every scene as you feel like you’re on a psychedelic ride through Walt Disney’s limitless imagination.  Despite the fact that it was released in 1940, it is an absolute must-see that isn’t held back by its age whatsoever.

The 2010 sci-fi/action film is the sequel to the original Tron, taking on a more updated approach to creating some of the trippiest and visually stunning sets and special effects to keep even casual viewers (or viewers who are incredibly high) totally engaged.  The high-concept, aesthetically driven film takes on a whole new meaning if you watch it with your favorite cannabinoids on hand.
