HHC-P Drug Test: Why You Will Fail

HHC-P products are coming to Binoid very soon, so it’s a good time to talk about the impact that this new cannabinoid could have on a drug test.  We know that a lot of Binoid customers love psychoactive, federally legal cannabinoids like delta 8, THC-P, THC-O and now HHC-P (hexahydrocannabiphorol), still a good number of our customers also happen to be individuals who may get drug-tested from time to time, for work, for probation or some other reason.

But, what about HHCP and HHCP products – does it put you at risk of failing a drug test, or does its hydrogenated nature mean that you’re in the clear?

What Is HHC-P?

HHC-P is known as the THC-P of HHC in the easiest comparision possible. It is very strong, but is not a THC in the traditional sense. THC-P is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in hemp, first discovered in 2019.  What makes THC-P so impressive is its ability to bind to CB1 receptors in the brain 31x more than delta 9 THC, giving it a high that some say is about 10x as potent as the more traditional THC compound.  THC-P gets its enhanced potency from an additional 7 carbon atoms in its side chain at the molecular scale.

Therefore, HHC-P is just as strong with around 31x the strength of Delta 9, and is now becoming very popular as a unique and powerful hemp experience in HHCP products

Can HHC-P Fail A Drug Test

Here’s the thing – we cannot say for certain whether or not it will.  As you may know, the jury is still out with HHC, which some people say gives them one negative result after another, while others have failed after one use.  Like HHC, HHC-P is a hydrogenated cannabinoid that is not processed through the same route as traditional forms of THC, and this may impact how it metabolizes, but we aren’t certain.

THC compounds like delta 8, delta 9, delta 10, THCV, THC-O, etc. are broken down by an enzyme called THC-COOH, with its precursor being 11-hydroxy THC, a pre-enzyme into which THC compounds are converted.  Because HHC is structurally different from THC, having a hydrogen component, it’s possible that it bypasses this process, getting metabolized by an entirely different enzymatic process – one that drug tests wouldn’t know to look for.  But again, this has not been verified, and so we’ll go with the “better safe than sorry” approach.

Drug Tests That May Pick Up HHC-P

Having a understanding of the different drug tests that can be administered to you is very important indeed.  Below are the most common drug tests administered by either workplaces, law enforcement agencies, etc. here in the United States.

  • Urine Tests: So, let’s assume HHC-P is just as likely to cause a positive result as delta 9 THC.  Urine tests are the most commonly administered in the country, being highly reliable, inexpensive and promising a fast turnaround time.  Urine tests would pick up HHC-P from 2-60 days at most after it was last taken.
  • Saliva Tests: Usually used by police and other law enforcement to see if someone has driven or committed another type of crime while intoxicated.  Saliva tests only show usage within the last 10 hours.
  • Hair Strand Tests: Not that common because they’re both expensive and somewhat unreliable – for instance, the test results are nullified if a person has dyed their hair.  They show drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Blood Tests: Usually are used in hospital settings, as they only show if a person is intoxicated at the present time.
  • Perspiration Tests: These are not all that common, and only really used for clinical testing.  They work by applying a patch to a person’s skin which collects samples of sweat for two weeks, and THC-COOH can be identified in that sweat.

Factors That May Influence Failing a Drug Test?

Now, let’s say you run out and buy some HHC-P, only to find you’ve been picked randomly to get drug-tested.  Here’s what can influence your outcome.

#1: When You Last Took HHC-P, and Your Frequency of Usage

The more recently you took HHC-P, the more likely you are to fail, since the cannabinoid would metabolize over a period of days or weeks until it’s no longer in the system.  In other words, if it’s been several weeks, you may be in the clear.  How frequently you used it matters, because the more HHC-P builds up in the body, the longer it will take for THC-COOH to process all of it.

#2: How You Metabolize Cannabinoids

If you’re one of the lucky people who just metabolizes cannabinoids quickly, congratulations since that can work in your favor.  We don’t know exactly why some people clear THC compounds out of the body faster than others, but it seems to be based on a combination of one’s current health, their diet and hydration levels, their metabolic efficiency and even their hormones.

#3: A HHCP Product’s Overall Potency Level

If you’re going with, say, a 50mg HHC-P gummy, you’re more likely to fail than if you’re consuming a 5mg gummy.  That’s because the more milligrams of HHC-P you consume, the longer it will take for each milligram to break down until the cannabinoid is finally cleared from the body.

HHC-P vs Delta 9 THC: What Are The Differences

HHC-P and Delta 9 are not very different, but they are also very different at the same time. They are both hemp cannabinoids, however HHC-P is a lot stronger with a 7 carbon chain. HHCP is around 31x stronger than Delta 9. Delta 9 THC is the most known compound in hemp and cannabis. The main compound found in flower that gets people high.

Bottom Line: Best to Play it Safe with Any Psychoactive Cannabinoid

Overall, if you’re someone who’s drug-tested regularly, you should probably stay away from hemp’s psychoactive cannabinoids for the time-being, since as of now, we don’t know of any that are guaranteed to not trigger a positive drug test result.  Maybe we’ll find out that HHC-P products does not get metabolized by THC-COOH, which would be fantastic news.  But, for now, err on the side of caution, to simply avoid risking your job or livelihood.
