New Cannabis Technology You Need To Know

Binoid is always staying on top of the latest in cannabis technology, which doesn’t just directly influence how we produce and sell our products, but shows what the future of the industry as a whole has in store.  With the cannabis market booming across the United States, largely thanks to more friendly legislation than ever before from state to state, we’re seeing incredible advancements in terms of technology, which boost every aspect of the industry from how the plant is cultivated to how it’s marketed.

Live Resin: A Growing Standard

One trend that’s certain to become an industry standard by the end of the year is live resin – refers to a specific type of extract that yields a more potent and flavorful extract.  Traditionally, hemp extractions have come from dry-cured flower, which is the process used to preserve commercially sold flower buds.  But, extracts don’t require the same level of preservation as they’re not prone to mold.

Live resin is extracted from fresh, flash-frozen flower rather than dry-cured, resulting in fresher and more concentrated trichomes, and thus a far more concentrated extract, in which you can tell the difference just by looking at its thicker, darker appearance.

Live resin can be used interchangeably with the more traditional dry-cured-based extracts, meaning that there isn’t a single extract-infused hemp product that can’t benefit from this upgrade.  We’re seeing it mostly in vapes for the time-being, and it’s proving to be an enormous success with consumers.

Strains, Strains, Strains

The world of cannabis strains is getting more exciting by the week.  Thanks to the highly advanced liquid chromatography technology used by breeders, those who create new strains are able to be more exacting when it comes to coming up with the perfect phenotype.  And, as a result, breeders are zeroing in on specific strains like never before, in that they’re able to develop cultivars that are capable of achieving extremely desirable results when it comes to things like sleep, pain and more.

Beyond that, strains are more accessible than ever thanks to vaping technology.  While there were once many rare cultivars only available within specific regions of the world, the hemp industry has been able to use technology to replicate pretty much any strain under the sun so that strain connoisseurs can access breeds of cannabis that were once impossible to find on the market.

Cannabinoids Galore

The world of cannabinoids is growing and diversifying at a rapid rate.  Cannabinoids that were unheard of just a couple of years ago, like THC-P, THC-H, THCjd, and the like are now at our fingertips.  How come?  Well, because of the exciting technology that has made it easier than ever to dissect the cannabinoid profile of cannabis and study the most trace cannabinoids that we never even knew existed until recently.  Meanwhile, thanks to isomerization processes, we’re able to create meaningfully potent and abundant extractions of these cannabinoids by simply rearranging the CBD molecules to convert cannabidiol into any other cannabinoid found in the plant.

Isomerization is possible with these cannabinoids because all cannabinoids are homologues of one another.  Remember that all cannabinoids begin as CBG (cannabigerol), the “mother cannabinoid”, before diversifying as the plant matures and converting into over 100 individual compounds.  As all cannabinoids are derived from CBG, they share the same molecule profiles, simply arranged in different aways.  Rearranging the molecules of one cannabinoid, therefore, converts it into another easily, for a highly cost-effective way to create potent extractions of minor cannabinoids found in less than 0.1% of the plant’s entire chemical composition.

Advanced Indoor Growing Methods

Growing has become more streamlined and high-tech than ever before thanks to greenhouse and indoor growing, which is now preferred over traditional outdoor growing in many parts of the world.  No longer having to rely on the finicky, unpredictable nature of weather, growers are able to create perfectly controlled indoor and greenhouse environments that ensure more consistent and abundant yields, and minimal waste.

LED grow lights have been one of the most crucial advancements, allowing breeders to perfectly maintain ideal light conditions for each strain that they’re cultivating.  Large-scale humidifiers and dehumidifiers also enable growers to ensure perfect humidity levels based on the needs of each individual cultivar.

Blockchain Technology

Blockchain technology is now utilized by most large commercial growers, as a way to track individual plants and maintain records that are used to ensure consistent yields as well as phenotypes.  Blockchain technology is also used to track the production process from seed to sale in order to be shared with customers, offering a traceable “seed to sale” record to enable consumer trust.  Beyond that, this tech also ensures consistent compliance with state and federal laws and standards.

The Future of Cannabis Tech Looks Bright

As the cannabis industry becomes more profitable (and legal) throughout the country, the tech world will continue to find new ways to make it more cost-efficient, advanced and streamlined, benefiting businesses and consumers alike.

For the time-being, the industry is advancing at an unprecedented rate, and we can’t wait to see what the future will bring as products themselves are getting more capable of addressing each customer’s needs than ever before.  In the meantime, all of us can benefit from these new evolutions in technology, whether we’re a casual user or a cannabis cultivator trying to break into the industry.
