Piece
A “piece” is whatever apparatus you use to smoke flower (aka bud, aka raw marijuana). It’s whatever kind of pipe you use, which can vary in size, design and features.
Bowl
A bowl is another term for a small pipe, and usually describes a spoon pipe which has a straight air channel and a bowl at the base. The weed goes into the bowl, and the smoke is inhaled through the end. Bowls are usually portable, and can fit into a pocket. Most bowls are made of blown glass.
Bong
A bong is a far more elaborate type of piece which has a water chamber at the base and, in most cases, an elongated airflow channel that is wide enough to create tons of smoke each time you light the bowl. A bong is going to get you really high, because you’re taking in way more smoke per puff than usual. Bongs can be several inches tall up to multiple feet.
Bong Rips
Bong rips are hits you take off of a bong.
Bubbler
A bubbler is a smaller, handheld water pipe that has a water chamber to filter and cool down the smoke. They come in various shapes, sizes and designs, and a lot of people prefer them because the water filtration system makes the smoke less harsh on the inhale.
Joint
A joint is ground up flower rolled into a thin paper – usually cigarette papers. It’s a quick and easy way to smoke, and you can take joints with you anywhere since they’re so small.
Blunt
A blunt is ground up weed rolled into a cigar wrapper, which is tobacco leaf. To roll a blunt, you just split a cigar down the middle lengthwise, remove the filler tobacco and replace it with weed before rolling it up. The wrap, being tobacco, contains nicotine, which some people say makes the high more energizing.
Spliff
A spliff is a roll of half weed, half tobacco, usually rolled in cigarette paper.
Dabs
Dabs are cannabis concentrates, and because they’re concentrated, they’re extremely potent and will get you very high. They’re “dabbed,” which means that they’re vaporized with a special type of device that heats the concentrates to an extremely high temperature so that they can melt and vaporize. Type of dabs include shatter, wax, budder, sauce, diamonds and hash.
Rig
A rig, or a dab rig, is a pipe-like device that’s used exclusively for dabbing. It has a stem and a nail that the concentrates go onto after they’ve been heated by a dab torch.
Torch
A torch is what heats the nail of a dab rig, because it can reach higher temps than a standard lighter. So, a torch is only associated with dabbing – not regular smoking.

Hash
Hash is a specific type of concentrate that dates back hundreds of years. It’s made by pressing the potent resinous glands of the flower into a brick or other compacted shape.
Ganja
Ganja is one of many terms for weed, and doesn’t refer to any special type of product.
Toke
Toking is just another word for smoking.
Strain
The strain is the cultivar of the plant. Cannabis comes in lots of different strains that each produce a distinctive kind of high and offer up a one-of-a-kind flavor profile. Indica strains are sleepier, sativa strains are more energizing, and hybrid strains give you something in between the two.
Hot Box
Hot boxing is smoking in an enclosed space without any real ventilation, so that you’re constantly breathing in smoke even when you’re not inhaling. It’s usually done in a car with the windows rolled up, but you can hot box a bathroom or a closet if you put a towel below the door.
Roach
A roach is the very end of the joint or blunt, which most people would discard since it’s really hard to handle it due to its small size. A roach clip is any type of tweezers-like device used to hold the roach while you smoke it, so you don’t burn your fingers.
Shake
Shake is the loose bits of buds at the end of the bag or the bottom of the jar, which can be repurposed and smoked in a pipe or rolled up in papers.
Kief
Kief is super potent powder that naturally falls off of the buds, and comes from the resinous trichomes that coat the flower. A lot of grinders nowadays have a compartment at the bottom that catches the kief. Kief can be sprinkled on top of regular flower to add a nice kick of potency to each hit.
Carts
These are vape cartridges that come pre-filled with an extracted weed vape oil, and are made to attach to standard vape pen devices. They’re an alternative to smoking raw flower.
Cherried
A “cherried” bowl means that it stays lit between hits, with a red glow that’s visible to show you that the weed is still burning. It means you can keep smoking without needing to relight your bud.
Kind
If you hear someone talking about “kind bud”, they mean that it’s an extra-special, top-shelf strain that gives an incredible high.
