THCM is a pretty new addition to the hemp market, and it’s also one of the most misunderstood hemp derivatives due to a lack of research behind it, and confusion about its origins. We’ve talked before about THCM’s potential benefits, chemical structure, and product types, but today we’re going to focus on something else: whether or not you can get too high off of it, and in general, what happens when you take too much THCM.

THCM: The Basics
THCM is a little bit of a perplexing hemp derivative, because it’s never actually been isolated in the raw plant material. While believed to be a naturally occurring cannabinoid that exists in super trace levels, it’s only actually been discovered in cannabis smoke, and has been used as a biomarker to determine if a fetus was exposed to marijuana while in utero. And, while its psychoactive effects have ultimately never been verified, it’s believed to produce a very mild high. It’s also a potentiator for other intoxicating cannabinoids, which is why you’ll often find it in combination with delta 8, THC-P, HHC, etc.
Is it Dangerous to Take Too Much THCM?
Fortunately, neither THCM nor any other cannabinoid has ever been found to cause a fatal overdose. Cannabinoids are known to be nontoxic to humans, and so, are not responsible for any life-threatening side effects. Plus, nobody has ever experienced permanent damage to their health because they took too much of a cannabinoid. So, you don’t have to worry about that, thankfully.
Still, of course, there’s a risk of side effects if you take too much THCM, or any cannabinoid for that matter, which are going to be short-lived and generally mild.
Common Ways to Take Too Much THCM
When we talk about taking too much THCM, we want to mention that there are a few ways in which the body can end up absorbing more of the cannabinoid than what a person’s body is prepared for. Let’s dive into that further.
Too High of a THC-M Dose
Unsurprisingly, it’s pretty common for someone to simply consume a larger dose than what’s recommended. This is why we always stress the importance of reading the label of the THCM product, where you’ll find dosing directions.
Not Knowing Your THCM Tolerance
If you have a low THC tolerance in general, because of inexperience or naturally tolerating lower amounts than the average person, then even a standard dose may be too high for you. If you know that you have a low tolerance, maybe try just half the recommended amount of THCM instead of a full dose.
Taking THC-M Edibles
Some people are more sensitive to the effects of edibles, in particular, than others. Edibles also produce the longest-lasting effects, so any potential side effects that come from taking too much could last longer than what you were prepared for.
Edibles produce different effects from other products, because ingesting cannabinoids allow the liver to release metabolites that enter the bloodstream and behave differently from the cannabinoid itself. People can be more likely to develop paranoia when taking a cannabinoid via ingestion.
Dabbing THC-M
Dabbing is a term that refers to vaping concentrates, and concentrates are known to be extremely potent – after all, it’s in the name. Unless you have a high tolerance to THC compounds, avoid dabbing, since the effects can be overwhelming for beginners.

What Happens if You Take Too Much THCM?
Now that we know that taking too much THCM isn’t necessarily dangerous, let’s go over the side effects that can occur, so you can know what to expect.
You Might Feel Anxious and/or Paranoid
Getting too high with THCM commonly causes anxiety and paranoia in certain people, and this is true of any intoxicating cannabinoid. Scientists still don’t fully know why this side effect occurs in some people more than others, but it has to do with THC’s effects on neurochemicals that dictate our state of mind.
You Might Get Cottonmouth and Bloodshot Eyes
Two of the most well-known side effects of most cannabinoids are cottonmouth (excessively dry mouth) and bloodshot eyes, and neither of these side effects last beyond a few hours.
You Might Feel Lightheaded and Get “Green Out”
Something that beginners in particular can experience is “green out,” which is caused by a drop in blood sugar that results from taking too much of a THC compound. This can cause you to experience dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, and an increased heart rate. Again, this isn’t actually putting you in real danger, so your best bet is to lay down and take it easy until the feeling passes.
You Might Feel Sleepy/Sluggish
A lot of cannabinoids including THCM cause sleepiness or drowsiness, and for some people, that can actually be helpful, if they’re taking cannabinoids at bedtime for sleep. Just keep in mind that you might be a bit sluggish or lethargic, until the high wears off.
You Might Feel Forgetful
Being too high with THCM can make it hard to concentrate or remain alert, and you may find that you’re forgetting things that were in your mind just a couple of seconds ago, struggling to retain your thoughts and focus.
You May Get the Shakes
Although it happens rarely, you might get the shakes from taking too much THCM. This is not actually cause for medical attention, but a nervous system response to being too high.
Is There Anything You Can Do if You’re Too High?
As it turns out, there are some methods that people swear by to bring down the intensity of the high after taking intoxicating cannabinoids.
- Wait it Out: The obvious option is to just give it a few hours until the high is past its peak, at which point it naturally starts to dissipate. Just remind yourself that you’re not in any real danger, and relax.
- Drink Some Coffee: The synergistic relationship between caffeine and THC means that a cup of coffee could help you feel more like yourself when you’re too high.
- Consume Some Citrus: Some people swear that fresh citrus helps when they feel too high, because of the limonene in citrus fruit. Limonene is a terpene that can subdue the heavier effects of THC.
- Take Some CBD: CBD is known to mellow out the high of THC, as the two cannabinoids share a close synergistic relationship with one another.
THCM: Probably Mild in its Effects, But Still Possible to Get Too High Off of
Ultimately, you can take as much THCM as you want and not worry about any life-threatening effects. But, most people want to avoid getting too high, because even the mild side effects can be unpleasant. The best thing you can do is stick to the recommended dosage on the label of the product, take your tolerance into account, and know that if side effects do come up, you’re going to be just fine in a few hours at most.
