THC-B vs HHC-O: Which Cannabinoid Is Better?

With more newly discovered cannabinoids hitting our industry, it’s an exciting time to be a hemp enthusiast.  Tetrahydrocannabutol (THC-B), since 2019, is beginning to make its way onto the market, giving hemp enthusiasts the chance to experience its effects for themselves.  Now, the question is, how well does this compound measure up against one that also new to scene called, HHC-O-Acetate (HHC-O)?

Why Choose THC-B?

THC-B Origin

Tetrahydrocannabutol is part of over a hundred cannabinoids that naturally occur in the hemp plant.  An extremely trace cannabinoid at that, THC-B was discovered initially in late 2019.  In fact, it was unearthed along with tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THC-P) by a team of Italian researchers analyzing the hemp plant’s chemical composition through liquid chromatography.

THC-B’s Psychoactive Properties

THC-B is on a level playing field with THC-P, a cannabinoid considered to be the most psychoactive in all of cannabis.  Still, we don’t yet know the specifics of the high in terms of its dominant effects – for instance, whether it creates a feeling of euphoria, whether it’s associated with couchlock, etc.

THC-B’s Non-Psychoactive Properties

Researchers who separated tetrahydrocannabutol did test it out in animal trials to get a basic understanding of what viable benefits there might be.  They showed how it created some of the mimicked effects in mice as it did in humans.

These main effects were the following:

  • Analgesic Properties: The researchers observed analgesic effects when testing out THC-B.  Analgesics are agents that reduce pain levels by affecting the way in which the brain receives signals from pain receptors that belong to the nervous system.  THC-B wouldn’t be the only cannabinoid to have analgesic effects, as several other cannabinoids, like CBD and delta 8 THC also have this property.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Many cannabinoids offer anti-inflammatory effects, and THC-B appears to be no different.  The observed anti-inflammatory properties associated with THC-B likely have to do with the cannabinoid’s interaction with CB2 receptors that, among other things, can regulate the immune system’s inflammation response.
  • Sleep Effects: THC-B was shown to have positive effects on sleep.  Specifically, the researchers observed that THC-B allowed for deeper sleep, and a shorter sleep onset time, both of which can be enormously useful to those who struggle with sleep each night.

Purpose for Taking THC-B

Essentially, if you’re looking for a cannabinoid that’s simply strong as THC-P and is very similar in effects but less harsh on the throat, then go for THC-B.

THC-B’s Legality

THC-B is also considered federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.  But, it’s a banned cannabinoid if you live in these following states below:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Utah
  • Washington

Why Choose HHC-O?

HHC-O Origins

HHC-O is produced as a semi-synthesized form of hexahydrocannabinol, aka HHC, which has been treated with an acetate (acetic anhydride) to change its molecular structure – a process also used to turn THC into THC-O, another very popular, powerful cannabinoid on the hemp market.  This process boosts the cannabinoid’s bioavailability, by allowing it to cross the blood brain barrier more efficiently, thus enabling it to act on cannabinoid receptors in the brain more powerfully for a stronger effect than HHC.

HHC-O’s Psychoactive Properties

HHC-O-Acetate is made through the identical methods involved in producing THC-O-Acetate, a euphoric form of THC that is far more intoxicating.  HHC-O seems to deliver powerful feelings of euphoria as well, and many say it delivers an equally potent body high that may cause couchlock.

HHC-O’s Non-Psychoactive Properties

HHC-O is extremely new to the hemp market, and what that means is that researchers haven’t yet gotten their hands on it to explore its physiological effects.  Beyond its psychoactive abilities, we don’t have any research-based information about what it can do in the long term.  But, HHC-O is a cannabinoid after all, and so we know that it does play a role in regulating processes of the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS)

Anecdotally, people who use it say that it offers relief from physical discomfort, nausea and stress, which isn’t surprising considering the fact that the cannabinoid is simply a stronger form of HHC, and HHC is known for basically mirroring the effects of delta 9 THC, a cannabinoid with far more scientific research to its name.

Purpose for Taking HHC-O

HHC-O’s most appealing factor is being a more potent form of HHC, so anyone who is a fan of HHC will likely want to give HHC-O a try since they can count on the same properties, only stronger.

HHC-O’s Legality

HHC-O-Acetate is a legal cannabinoid since it complies with the 2018 Farm Bill.  This law says that all hemp products are legal as long as they have no more than 0.3% delta 9 THC by dry weight.  While HHC-O is considered federally legal, a handful of states have banned all psychoactive cannabinoids, and those would be the following:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Utah
  • Washington

Final Decision: THC-B and HHC-O – Two Strong Psychoactive Cannabinoids Worth Trying

Both THC-B and HHC-O can deliver an unforgettably potent high, in different ways.  So, rather than trying to select only one, we encourage you to give each a try and do your own cannabinoid matchup, comparing them and deciding what each type brings to the table.
