THCA Flower vs. CBD Flower

Right now, the hemp market is buzzing about THCA flower, which is yet another surprisingly legal product that’s derived naturally from hemp.  With THCA flower being the big must-try product of the moment, many people are wondering how it compares to other forms of flower – mainly CBD flower.  Because one is very psychoactive and one may only be slightly intoxicating at most, understanding the distinction is all the more important if you’re buying flower any time soon.

Let’s compare the two types of flower, since beginners in particular may be confused as to which one is going to give them the effects that they’re looking for.  As you’ll see, even though both types of flower are super worthwhile in their own ways, they’re extremely different from each other in ways that can really matter to you.

What is CBD Flower?

First, let’s take a look at CBD flower.  CBD flower and hemp flower are often confused for one another, but there are some important distinctions.  Both refer to the buds of the hemp plant, which is a member of the cannabis genus, and legal, unlike marijuana, under federal law.

CBD flower is hemp flower that’s grown specifically to yield very high concentrations of CBD – up to about 25%, and sometimes even higher.  Besides that, technically, CBD flower may contain up to 5% delta 9 THC – which would make it federally illegal, but legal in states where THC laws aren’t so restrictive.  Meanwhile, hemp flower must, by law, contain a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC.  To make things even more complicated, the large majority of CBD flower you’ll encounter, including any flower you find online, must, by law, contain no more than 0.3% delta 9.

CBD flower is generally nonintoxicating, with the exception of CBD flower sold in states where marijuana is allowed, where levels may reach up to 5%.  So, with federally complaint CBD flower, you’re really never going to get high no matter how much you take.

So, what’s the purpose, then, of taking CBD flower?  Well, it’s all about those potential benefits, which have nothing to do with getting high, such as:

  • Relief from stress
  • Relief from physical discomfort
  • Relief from low appetite
  • Nausea relief
  • Mood-lifting properties
  • Help with focusing/feeling motivated
  • Neurological regulation
  • Anti-inflammatory properties

What is THCA Flower?

Now, let’s look at THCA flower, which is much newer to the hemp market.  THCA flower is hemp flower that’s also federally legal, like CBD flower, because it also yields no more than 0.3% delta 9 THC.

THCA flower is grown to yield high levels of THCA, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid – the precursor of delta 9 THC.  The thing is that when left raw, THCA is nonintoxicating.  But, when it’s heated, as it must be for flower to be used (through smoking, vaporizing, or cooking/baking), it turns into delta 9 THC.  This means that chemically, THCA flower is pretty much identical to weed, except it’s hemp-derived, so it’s compliant with the law.  The law, surprisingly perhaps, doesn’t really care about the fact that THCA will turn into delta 9 when the flower is heated.  As long as the test results show that flower contains no more than 0.3% THC at the time of being sold, it’s perfectly fine.

THCA flower is, in other words, going to get you high – pretty much as high as marijuana would, since the THCA levels work out to be the same, strain for strain.  So, that is the biggest difference to consider between the two types of flower, as naturally, some hemp users want to get high, and others do not, and are only seeking out the potential benefits of flower.

Otherwise, we do want to point out that THCA flower brings the same potential benefits as CBD flower, because these two cannabinoids share a ton of properties in common, while containing loads of other beneficial compounds that also play a major role in the potential therapeutic uses of the plant.  Plus, it’s important to keep in mind that CBD flower and THCA flower are sold in the same strains, since again, they both come from hemp, which can be bred into any strain that exists on the cannabis market.

Who Would Prefer CBD Flower?

Now, let’s talk about which type of flower is best for you, starting with CBD flower.  You’ll probably prefer CBD flower if:

  • You want to avoid getting high.
  • You’re looking for a particularly calming experience.
  • You’re new to cannabis, and simply aren’t ready yet to get high off of it, but possibly may want to in the future.
  • Getting drug-tested, but still want to enjoy a cannabis product (again, you’ll need to stick to CBD flower that contains no more than 0.3% THC to pass a test).

Who Would Prefer THCA Flower?

So, what about THCA flower?  Let’s see who might benefit from choosing this option out of the two.  THCA flower is perfect for you if:

  • You want a weed high but live in a state where marijuana is not legal.
  • You want to get the potential benefits from weed but can’t access weed.

Keep in mind that since THCA does turn into delta 9 THC once it’s heated, you will fail a drug test just like you would if you were to take marijuana.  So, even though THCA flower is federally legal, you’ll need to avoid it if you’re going to be tested any time soon.

Can You Take Both of Them Together?

You might be wondering whether or not it’s okay to take both THCA flower and CBD flower, and the answer is a resounding yes.  You can find places for both in your routine – like CBD flower in the daytime, when you have to be present enough to work, and THCA flower at night, when you want to get high and escape your day-to-day.  You can even take them at the same time, since CBD flower can “take the edge off” of the high of THCA flower, for a more balanced and relaxing experience.

The Winner is: Both THCA Flower and CBD Flower are Worthwhile!

The good news is that both THCA flower and CBD flower are federally legal, and relatively easy to find on today’s hemp market.  So, if you do want to try either, you can pretty easily, while being able to choose from all kinds of top-notch strains.  At Bloomz, you can find top-shelf THCA flower, sold fresh in a fantastic strain selection, if you’re ready to dive into the world of psychoactive hemp.
