THC-B vs HHC: Which Cannabinoid Is Better?

With more newly discovered cannabinoids hitting our industry, it’s an exciting time to be a hemp enthusiast.  Tetrahydrocannabutol (THC-B), since 2019, is beginning to make its way onto the market, giving hemp enthusiasts the chance to experience its effects for themselves.  Now, the question is, how well does this compound measure up against one that also new to scene called, hexahydrocannabinol (HHC).

Why Choose THC-B?

THC-B Origin

Tetrahydrocannabutol is part of over a hundred cannabinoids that naturally occur in the hemp plant.  An extremely trace cannabinoid at that, THC-B was discovered initially in late 2019.  In fact, it was unearthed along with tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THC-P) by a team of Italian researchers analyzing the hemp plant’s chemical composition through liquid chromatography.

THC-B’s Psychoactive Properties

THC-B is on a level playing field with THC-P, a cannabinoid considered to be the most psychoactive in all of cannabis.  Still, we don’t yet know the specifics of the high in terms of its dominant effects – for instance, whether it creates a feeling of euphoria, whether it’s associated with couchlock, etc.

THC-B’s Non-Psychoactive Properties

Researchers who separated tetrahydrocannabutol did test it out in animal trials to get a basic understanding of what viable benefits there might be.  They showed how it created some of the mimicked effects in mice as it did in humans.

These main effects were the following:

  • Analgesic Properties: The researchers observed analgesic effects when testing out THC-B.  Analgesics are agents that reduce pain levels by affecting the way in which the brain receives signals from pain receptors that belong to the nervous system.  THC-B wouldn’t be the only cannabinoid to have analgesic effects, as several other cannabinoids, like CBD and delta 8 THC also have this property.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Many cannabinoids offer anti-inflammatory effects, and THC-B appears to be no different.  The observed anti-inflammatory properties associated with THC-B likely have to do with the cannabinoid’s interaction with CB2 receptors that, among other things, can regulate the immune system’s inflammation response.
  • Sleep Effects: THC-B was shown to have positive effects on sleep.  Specifically, the researchers observed that THC-B allowed for deeper sleep, and a shorter sleep onset time, both of which can be enormously useful to those who struggle with sleep each night.

Purpose for Taking THC-B

Essentially, if you’re looking for a cannabinoid that’s simply strong as THC-P and is very similar in effects but less harsh on the throat, then go for THC-B.

THC-B’s Legality

THC-B is also considered federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.  But, it’s a banned cannabinoid if you live in these following states below:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Utah
  • Washington

Why Choose HHC?

HHC Origin

Hexahydrocannabinol is a naturally occurring cannabinoid, being present in the hemp plant’s seeds and pollen.  HHC is a hydrogenated analog of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), meaning that it contains hydrogen molecules.  HHC is known to mirror the effects of HHC, while having impressive shelf stability due to its hydrogenated nature.

HHC’s Psychoactive Properties

HHC’s high is milder, as it’s about as intoxicating as delta 9 THC, but perhaps slightly milder than that as well.  If you’re a beginner to psychoactive cannabinoids, HHC is the ideal starting point for this reason.  The high, like delta 9’s, can offer an uplifting effect on mood that helps ease away stress, while being fairly hazy, like delta 9.

HHC’s Non-Psychoactive Properties

Hexahydrocannabinol has not yet been tested for its properties related to things like pain, anxiety, sleep, appetite, etc., because it hasn’t been around long enough.  But, HHC has been reported to behave just like delta 9 in pretty much any way, given the fact that the cannabinoids are analogs of one another.

Purpose for Taking HHC

HHC offers both recreational and potentially therapeutic value, so there are many reasons for taking it.  Overall, people go with HHC because they’re looking for a cannabinoid that’s very similar to delta 9 THC.

HHC’s Legality

HHC is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.  But, as far a state regulations go, it’s prohibited in the following:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Utah
  • Washington
