THC-B vs THC-P: Which Cannabinoid Is better?

As we continue seeing an endless wave of newly discovered cannabinoids hitting the hemp market, tetrahydrocannabutol (THC-B), since 2019, is beginning to make its way onto the market, giving hemp enthusiasts the chance to experience its effects for themselves.  Now, the question is, how well does this compound matchup against one that’s also recently discovered and just hit the market: tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THC-P)?

Why Choose THC-B?

THC-B Origin

Tetrahydrocannabutol is part of over 100 cannabinoids that naturally occurs in the hemp plant.  An extremely trace cannabinoid at that, THC-B was discovered initially in late 2019.  In fact, it was unearthed along with tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THC-P) by a team of Italian researchers analyzing the hemp plant’s chemical composition through liquid chromatography.

THC-B’s Psychoactive Properties

THC-B is on a level playing field with THC-P, a cannabinoid considered to be the most psychoactive in all of cannabis.  Still, we don’t yet know the specifics of the high in terms of its dominant effects – for instance, whether it creates a feeling of euphoria, whether it’s associated with couchlock, etc.

THC-B’s Non-Psychoactive Properties

Researchers who separated tetrahydrocannabutol did test it out in animal trials to get a basic understanding of what viable benefits there might be.  They showed how it created some of the mimicked effects in mice as it did in humans.

Purpose for Taking THC-B

Basically, if you’re looking for a cannabinoid that’s simply strong as THC-P and is very similar in effects but less harsh on the throat, then go for THC-B.

THC-B’s Legality

THC-B is also considered federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.  But, it’s a banned cannabinoid if you live in any of the following states below:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Utah
  • Washington

Why Choose THC-P?

THC-P Origin

THC-P is a cannabinoid that was only discovered in December of 2019 by a team of cannabis researchers.  The compound occurs naturally in the hemp plant, in extremely trace levels.

THC-P’s Psychoactive Properties

THC-P is known to be the most intoxicating cannabinoid in the hemp plant, at least that we know of so far.  It’s reported to be about 10 times as psychoactive as delta 9 THC, which basically means that it can get you extremely high, milligram for milligram.  The high is known for being phenomenally euphoric, and how much it may impair cognitive function for the duration of the high is still up for debate because of limited research.

THC-P’s Non-Psychoactive Properties

THC-P is brand-new, and to date, there’s only really been one study on its specific effects.  This research that does exist interestingly shows that THC-P seems to provide the same potential benefits as delta 9 THC, only in a far more potent way.  The cannabinoid seems to work on the same cannabinoid receptors as delta 9 but may bind to these specific receptors at about 31x the rate of delta-9.

Purpose for Taking THC-P

THC-P is mainly taken for recreational reasons, since people naturally want to experience its phenomenally potent high for themselves.  But, it’s clear that there is more than psychoactive value in this cannabinoid, so people might choose it because they want certain effects associated with delta 9 in a more potent way.

THC-P’s Legality

Because of the 2018 Farm Bill, tetrahydrocannabiphorol is federally legal, as it comes from hemp and contains no more than 0.3% delta 9 THC.  Meaning, under federal law, there are no restrictions regarding product type or THC-P concentration in a particular product.  However, THC-P has been banned in the following states:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Utah
  • Washington

Final Decision: THC-B and THC-P Can Bring Similar Effects to Your Hemp Experience

It goes without saying that both THC-B and THC-P have some exciting effects to offer, and the strongest difference would have to be the high that they produce, with THC-P being slightly more potent.  Fortunately, there is no reason why you can only choose one over the other.  Both of these cannabinoids are available to experiment with, and also can find room in your rotation of hemp products.
