THCM is the newest hemp derivative to arrive, and the one that we know the least about, as it’s safe to say that it’s the most mysterious cannabis byproduct to enter the commercial market thus far. While its association with THC is obvious through its name, we don’t even know if it can get users high.
With THCM being so brand new, and most hemp enthusiasts never having even heard of it, we want to compare it to a more well-known cannabinoid, which is HHC, also known as “HXC”.

Why Choose THCM?
THCM Origin
THCM (11-Nor-Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol-9-Carboxylic Acid {Carboxy-THC}) is a cannabis byproduct first discovered in 1997. It’s never actually been isolated in the plant itself, meaning that from a technical standpoint, there’s no proof that it even exists in raw cannabis. Rather, it has been identified in cannabis smoke, and is used as a biomarker to confirm that a fetus has been exposed to cannabis while in the womb.
THCM’s Psychoactive Properties
For the time-being, we don’t actually know about THCM’s psychoactive properties. Whether or not the cannabinoid is intoxicating has yet to be confirmed, but one thing that we do know is that if it is psychoactive, the effects are likely to be extremely mild. And, without knowing whether or not it’s psychoactive, we don’t know if the potential high would be more euphoric, energizing, calming, etc.
Purpose for Taking THCM
THCM is extremely rare on the market right now, and for the time-being, we’ve only seen it in vaping products, in combination with other cannabinoids that do deliver well-known psychoactive effects. Because of that, it’s safe to say that for now, THCM’s purpose is to potentiate the effects of other cannabinoids, and enhance the entourage effect.
THCM’s Legality
THCM is, in fact, a legal cannabinoid according to federal law, when it comes from the hemp plant, because of the Farm Bill, which passed in 2018, and legalized any hemp product that contains a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC. THCM may sound a lot like delta 9 THC in its name, but ultimately, it’s a different compound.
One thing that you need to be aware of, however, is that 19 states have banned all THC cannabinoids, and THCM would fall into that category. So, you should assume that THCM is illegal in:
- Alaska
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Colorado
- Delaware
- Hawaii
- Idaho
- Iowa
- Maryland
- Mississippi
- Montana
- Nevada
- New York
- North Dakota
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- Utah
- Vermont
- Washington

Why Choose HHC/HXC?
HHC/HXC Origin
HHC/HXC is a cannabinoid that’s found in the hemp plant’s seeds and pollen. Also known as hexahydrocannabinol, it’s a hydrogenated THC analog, which means that it contains a hydrogen atom. HHC/HXC is known to mimic the effects of delta 9, being just a tad milder, while having impressive shelf stability because it’s hydrogenated.
HHC/HXC’s Psychoactive Properties
HHC/HXC’s high is said to be about as potent as delta 9 THC, although possibly just a little bit milder. The high, like delta 9’s, can deliver an uplifting effect on mood that helps ease away stress.
Purpose for Taking HHC/HXC
HHC/HXC has recreational value thanks to its high, and probably has therapeutic uses as well, so there are numerous reasons to want to take it. Most people use HHC/HXC because they’re looking for a cannabinoid that feels like delta 9 THC.
HHC/HXC’s Legality
HHC/HXC, like THCM, is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. But, since HHC/HXC is intoxicating, it’s banned in the same states as THCM.
Final Decision: THCM and HHC/HXC: Two Ways to Experience the Hemp Plant
THCM is a cannabinoid that we know very little about, so it’s hard to compare it to HHC/HXC, a cannabinoid that has been on the market long enough for us to have a good idea of what it’s capable of. And, of course, HHC/HXC is more widely available than THCM, at least for now, so you’ll have an easier time finding it.
But, keep your eyes peeled, because THCM is coming to the market soon. And, you may very well encounter products that combine these two cannabinoids, to offer an even more substantial high, along with other desirable effects.
