THC-O Acetate Drug Test: Why You Will Fail

The more researchers analyze the hemp plant, the more we understand about the unique properties of each of its 150 or so cannabinoids.  Cannabinoids like cannabidiol (CBD) and delta 9 THC are well-established, having been researched for decades.

But, newer cannabinoids like THC-O acetate that are only now being introduced onto the market are less familiar to us, and so it’s important to be mindful of how they’re going to affect us ahead of time, as their properties can vary quite a bit.  Perhaps more importantly, some cannabinoids may not make it past a standard drug test.

What Is THC-O Acetate?

A compound that has been getting a lot of attention lately is THC-O-Acetate (THC-O), a synthesized form of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) derived from the hemp plant that may yield psychoactive effects 3x as powerful as delta 9 THC.  While its molecular structure and overall property profile is quite different from delta 9, that doesn’t mean that those who take it are safe from a positive drug test provided by their employer.

Can THC-O Acetate Fail A Drug Test

As of now, it is believed that THC-O-Acetate will cause a person to fail a drug test.  Why?  Because THC-O is chemically similar enough to delta 9 THC that it almost certainly causes the body to produce THC-COOH.  In fact, if THC-O is more potent, this may mean that even more THC-COOH is produced, thus increasing your chances of failing a test even if you only used a little bit of the cannabinoid.

Presently, there are no actual studies that show that a person produces THC-COOH after consuming THC-O-Acetate, but at the same time, based on their similarities, we must assume that if you use THC-O, you will fail a urine test.

Despite the fact that hemp and THC-O is federally legal, as are its cannabinoids including THC-O, people worry that taking THC-O will yield a failed drug test due to the similarities between the two compounds, meaning that even though THC-O is legal, it can trigger the same result as taking delta 9 THC, and of course, a person can’t prove to their employer that they’re taking a legal form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) rather than marijuana. Update: THC-O is not legal anymore due to the DEA stating THCO is synthetic. Many brands are fighting this statement, we will see where it goes.

Factors that May Trigger A Positive THC-O Acetate Drug Test

So, let’s say you’ve already taken THCO and you just found out you have a drug test coming up.  Well, good news is that there are some factors that influence how likely you are to fail your test, so you may get lucky depending on how you take your THC-O.

#1: Last Time You Took THC-O

Of course, when you last used THCO will play a role.  The longer it has been since you used THC-O or how long ago it was that you used it, the less chance there is that there are THC metabolites in your system. And therefore the lower chance of triggering a test.

For example, If it has been over a few weeks since you last took THC-O, there is a good chance that you will not fail your test.  By this point, it is very likely that there are no more traces of THC-COOH in your system, as the compound has fully metabolized and left the body.

#2: How Often You Take THCO

The more frequently you take THC-O, the more likely you are to fail a test.  Daily use leading up to the test will likely cause you to fail, but if you’ve only taken it, say, twice in the last month, your chances are much better.

Like all THC’s, the more you take the longer period of time it will take for the metabolites to clear out of your body. THCO likely follows this same trend. That means that if you use THC-O heavily, you will need a couple of weeks to safely become clean for a test.

#3: Type of THC-O Product

The delivery method plays a larger role than you may think.  Typically, delivery methods that produce longer-lasting effects stay in the body longer.  For instance, vaping THC-O allows the cannabinoid to leave the body at an accelerated rate than consuming it as an edible like THC-O Gummies, a THC-O capsule, or even in a THC-O tincture form.

#4: How Your Body Metabolizes THC-O

Our bodies are unique, and some of us just seem to metabolize THCO more quickly than others due to individual metabolic processes.  Some people basically luck out despite having taken THC-O recently, while others may have levels of THC-COOH in the system longer than the norm.

Your metabolism plays a larger role than you think in the time it takes for you to become clear for a drug test. There’s no way to know exactly how efficiently your body breaks down THC compared to someone else. However, it is a safe to say that you cannot rely on a fast metabolism to get the THC-O out of your body in a short manner. It is still very risky.

#5: The Milligram Strength Dosage You Take Of The THC-O Acetate

Naturally, the higher the milligram strength and dosage of THC-O being consumed, the longer it will take to leave your body, as higher strengths mean more time needed to fully metabolize.

This is because the milligram strength of the THCO product you use determines how much detectable THC may be in your system at the time of a test. A dose of a 5000mg tincture will take longer to get rid of than a 1000mg THC-O Tincture. This means, it might be a bad idea to have a good dose of a 5000mg tincture a few days before a drug test. But a CBD oil has a chance to pass. Due to low THC amounts.

How THC Drug Tests Work

Virtually all employers and other organizations rely on a urine test to detect evidence that a person has recently consumed tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).  These tests are not looking for actual THC compounds in the urine, but THC-COOH, which is a metabolite that the body produces after consuming THC.

This metabolite helps break down THC in the system, and its fat-soluble nature allows it to linger in the body for days to weeks after THC was last consumed.  This is very important, because many mistakenly believe that a urine test only looks for delta 9 THC.

So, the question is then, what other cannabinoids can lead to the production of THC-COOH, which could lead to a positive test?

What is the Difference Between THC-O and Delta 9 THC?

Like we just established, since THC-O-Acetate is more psychoactive than delta 9 THC, it may even be capable of producing psychedelic effects in certain doses.  This certainly makes it an appealing option given the federally illegal nature of the latter, as THC-O is also technically a hemp derivative which therefore allows it to comply with federal law.

THC-O-Acetate’s specific benefits properties, like those that pertain to mood, appetite and sleep, are not yet established, since the cannabinoid has not been on the market for very long and therefore does not have lengthy amounts of research behind it.  How it’s produced is also unique.  Both delta 9 THC and THC-O are derived from THCA, the raw predecessor compound that eventually is converted into delta 9 in nature.

While delta 9 THC naturally occurs in hemp, THC-O-Acetate does not.  THC-O is created by blending THCA with acetic anhydride, which means that it is synthesized.  However, it retains many properties similar to delta 9 due to its common ancestor.

What Should You Know About THC-O Before Getting Tested?

At the end of the day, we suggest that you avoid THC-O if you are going to be given a drug test in the near future.  That’s because the risk is just too high of failing.  However, if you already have taken THC-O and have a test coming up, there are some factors to consider that can determine the outcome.

THC-COOH levels produced in the body can be detectable for up to 6 weeks depending on how much you’ve used and how recently you’ve used it.  If you’ve only had a tiny amount and it’s been at least 5 days, you may be in the clear.  If you are a daily user who consumes a good amount of THC-O, you may need over a month before your test will come back negative.

It’s also important to remember that THC-O is not the only federally legal hemp cannabinoid that can cause THC-COOH to be produced in the body.  Delta 8 THC, delta 10 THC, THC-O and THC-P may all cause the same response.  Meaning, if you take multiple psychoactive hemp cannabinoids, your chance of failing a drug test will increase.

Note: Even if you attempted to avoid any cannabis use for about 3-4 weeks, there is a chance of still failing a random drug test carried out for purposes such as probation, roadside checks, and even possible employment.  Weed detox, use of zinc supplements, dilute your urine, and drinking cranberry juice are among other things some people have tried in order to eliminate the THC-COOH in their body at a faster rate.  However, none of these methods has proven to be very effective

THC-O Acetate Drug Testing Final Thoughts

It’s likely that THC-O will cause you to fail a drug test, which is why we strongly urge you to avoid taking it until after you’ve been drug-tested.  Even though it’s a legal cannabinoid, a drug test will not be able to tell the difference between THC-O products and marijuana.  Basically, frequent cannabis users might want to avoid it for an average of 4-6 weeks before carrying.  Even if you only indulge occasionally, you might just need a week before it is completely out of your system.

However, if you are not drug tested, we would definitely suggest buying your THC-O products online at trusted websites such as Binoid CBD. They carry the top THCO brands, with fast and free shipping.
