THC-P: Everything You Need To Know

As we speak, there’s a seemingly endless parade of newly discovered cannabinoids debuting on the hemp market, all derived from hemp yet totally unique in terms of their effects, properties, psychoactive abilities and potency.  Because it can be challenging to keep track of every single one, even as a seasoned hemp enthusiast, we’re going to simplify things by sharing the most interesting and must-know facts about the cannabinoids people are interested in the most.

What Makes THC-P So Interesting?

One of newest cannabinoid to excite hemp researchers is tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THC-P).  And, as you may have guessed from its name, THC-P is yet another psychoactive hemp derivative to join those already booming on the market.  Unsurprisingly, THC-P is unique from all of the others, with properties that set it apart and make it a worthy addition to the bustling industry.

With that said, let’s take deeper dive into the things you need to know about THC-P.

Fact #1: THC-P Was Only Discovered Recently

THC-P is a very trace cannabinoid in the hemp plant, making up probably below 0.1% of the plant’s entire chemical composition.  And, we didn’t even know that it exists until late 2019, when cannabis researchers finally found it hiding out in raw cannabis material.  It’s always been there, of course, but we only know of its existence now thanks to the more advanced analysis technology that allows us to discover new cannabinoids through the use of liquid chromatography.

Fact #2: THC-P is Probably the Most Powerful Cannabinoid in Cannabis

THC-P was quickly found to be the most powerful cannabinoid in cannabis, that we know of so far.  It attaches to the brain’s CB1 receptors at a staggering 31x the rate of delta 9 THC, meaning that its ability to introduce its effects is quite profound.  This applies not only to its psychoactive effects, but likely all of its effects, including ones that may be useful in the therapeutic sense – more on that later.

Fact #3: THC-P’s High is Completely One-of-a-Kind

It goes without saying that THC-P’s high is totally unique – that’s the case with all psychoactive cannabinoids in the hemp market, after all.  It’s undeniably more potent than any other of the 100+ cannabinoids – about 10x as intoxicating as delta 9 THC for reference.  Its effects are known to be generally euphoric and uplifting, and it may introduce a feeling of enhanced energy before introducing a potent body high that may lead to couchlock – aka a feeling of being “glued” to the couch as the muscles feel a relief from tension.

Fact #4: The THC-P in Your Product Probably Comes from CBD

THC-P does exist in hemp naturally, but there’s only a very trace amount of it in the hemp plant – about 0.1% or less, like we said earlier – and that’s a ridiculously low concentration.  What this means is that to isolate THC-P in hemp and extract enough to mass-produce it would require an enormous amount of time, effort and raw plant material, not to mention money.

But, there’s a solution that’s far more efficient.  All cannabinoids are isomers of one another, as they are all derived from CBG (cannabigerol), aka the “mother cannabinoid”.  Isomers have the same exact atomic structures as one another, yet they’re arranged differently.  This means that simply rearranging the atoms in one cannabinoid converts it into an entirely different one.

Isomerization is a process generally used to produce all cannabinoid distillates other than CBD.  CBD, aka cannabidiol, is the only cannabinoid in hemp that’s very abundant, making up around 20% of the entire composition of the plant.  Isolating CBD is very simple and inexpensive because of this, and thus, rearranging its molecules can produce a true and pure delta 9 distillate which is ready to go into different products.

Fact #5: THC Might Offer Potential Therapeutic Uses

With most cannabinoids, we focus almost exclusively on the high that they can deliver – and there’s nothing wrong with that, since it’s fun to explore the recreational side of the cannabis plant, especially when we’re dealing with legal cannabinoids.  THC-P is known for its ultra-powerful high, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have other potential uses.

Remember, cannabinoids all work with our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which enables them to regulate different bodily responses that affect how we feel and function.

THC-P: There’s More Than Meets the Eye

THC-P is a totally distinctive and fascinating hemp derivative that comes with all kinds of uses and possible benefits.  And, it can’t be overlooked that its high is extremely sought-after, being phenomenally powerful and capable of delivering a profound sense of euphoria.  Even better, it’s completely federally legal, hence, you can enjoy it however you so choose.
