THC-P Shelf Life: Expiration Date

Tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THC-P) is a cannabinoid that many of you have likely only heard of recently, and because of that, there are still a lot of questions that Binoid customers are wondering about it, like its properties, how it’s made and whether or not it’s a cannabinoid that’s good to combine with others like CBD, delta 8 THC, delta 10 THC, THC-O, and the like.  Another important question has to do with the shelf life of THC-P, because naturally, we want to know how long our hemp products are good for while they’re in our possession.

THC-P: The Newest Addition to the Hemp Market

For anyone with only a vague idea of what THC-P is, allow us to offer a basic overview of how this cannabinoid compares to others that you may have tried.  Discovered in late 2019, tetrahydrocannabiphorol is the most recent cannabinoid to enter our awareness, even though it’s a naturally occurring compound that’s been part of the hemp plant’s chemical composition since hemp has been a plant.

What’s most striking about THC-P is its psychoactive potential, as it binds to CB1 receptors in the brain about 31x as effectively as delta 9, thus giving it the ability to offer a far stronger high than any other cannabinoid that we’re currently aware of.  Further, its properties seem to really mimic those of delta 9 in terms of its non-intoxicating effects related to mood, nausea, discomfort, etc.

How Long Does THC-P Stay Fresh Then?

As a general rule of thumb, pure cannabinoid extracts have a shelf life of about 2 years before they begin to break down.  What’s interesting about THC-P is that technically, we haven’t had an extract of the cannabinoid for enough time to compare its shelf life to that of other cannabinoids.

Since it was discovered at the end of December 2019, we still have a bit of time before we can officially determine whether or not it can last for a total 2 years or even more.  However, given what we know about cannabinoids, and due to tetrahydrocannabiphorol’s similarities to many others, it’s safe to assume that 2 years is a solid estimate.

Why Can Different Delivery Methods Have Different Expiration Dates?

While pure tetrahydrocannabiphorol likely lasts for about 2 years, that doesn’t mean that all THCP-infused products apply.  Each delivery method can alter the shelf life based not on the THC-P itself, but the other ingredients in the product.

  • THC-P Vape Cartridges: Most vape cartridges contain 100% pure hemp extracts, which would imply that they are good for up to 2 years.
  • THC-P Disposable Vapes: Disposable vapes contain the same formulas that are in carts, which is why their shelf life would be the same.
  • THC-P Flower: THC-P-infused flower would likely have a shelf life of about 6 months, since the flower’s properties do degrade more quickly than extracted compounds.
  • THC-P Dabs: For the same reasons as flower, THC-P dabs are likely fresh for about 6 months.
  • THC-P Edibles: Edibles like gummies can vary a lot in shelf life based on the ingredients used.  As a rule of thumb, the fresher the ingredients (i.e., real fruit extracts vs. artificial flavoring), the sooner they expire.  Most gummies are best consumed within 3-6 months of purchase.
  • THC-P Capsules: Since cannabinoid-based capsules usually contain only pure extracts and MCT oil, they usually offer a 2-year shelf life.
  • THC-P Tinctures: Like capsules, tinctures usually contain only pure cannabinoid extracts and MCT oil, offering a 2-year shelf life.  If they contain natural flavoring, like fruit extracts, the shelf life may be shorter.

Storing THC-P to Extend its Shelf Life

A huge component to shelf life is storage.  Tetrahydrocannabiphorol that’s stored improperly can expire long before its expected expiration date.  As a rule, all hemp products should be kept in a cool, dark and dry place, like a closet, cabinet or drawer.

Exposure to light, heat and humidity all force the cannabinoid to break down more quickly, essentially resulting in a useless and wasted product.  This means that THC-P should never be kept in a bathroom, next to a sunny window or outdoors.

What Happens When You Consume Expired THC-P?

The good news is that it’s not associated with any harm.  Cannabinoids don’t take on toxic properties once they’ve aged beyond their shelf life, but instead, they break down due to oxidization.  This means that the molecules within the cannabinoid become unstable and lose their potency.

In other words, expired tetrahydrocannabiphorol is unlikely to get you sick, but more likely, you just won’t get the effects associated with the cannabinoid.  Since no one wants to waste money on THC-P, always strive to store it properly and consume it within a reasonable amount of time after you’ve purchased it.

How to Know You’re Getting Fresh, Non-Expired THC-P Products

Sometimes, a THC-P product may be close to expiring at the time of purchase, at the fault of the manufacturer.  This is why the key is to purchase THC-P that’s freshly made from top brands such as Binoid CBD.  Since brands aren’t required to mark the expiration date on a hemp product, you’ll need to rely on other methods to know that the product you’re getting is fresh.

The best way to do this is to go with a trusted, well-respected online manufacturer, for a couple of key reasons:

Reason #1: Online THC-P companies that have a good reputation like Binoid don’t want to risk losing customers by selling expired or close-to-expiring THC-P.  This would lead to a lot of disappointed customers, so these brands will make sure that they only ship out fresh products.

Reason #2: Popular, highly trusted brands are going to have a higher product turnover rate, due to their popularity.  This means that it’s unlikely they even have THC-P in their inventory that’s been sitting on the shelf all that long.
