Delta 10 THC: A Completely Unique Cannabinoid
Delta 10 is a lot different from other cannabinoids that are more well established. For example, cannabidiol (CBD), Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-8-THC), delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9 THC), cannabinol (CBN) and other, more familiar cannabinoids are clearly traceable in the raw plant material in its most natural form.
Delta 10 does not naturally occur in cannabis but is in fact an isomer of CBD that was discovered by accident. This was as a result of a crystallization process that occurred due to abnormal environmental factors.
Another thing that makes delta 10 unique is that it’s the only known cannabinoid that exists in two forms, meaning that there are two separate versions of the same compound, much like a left foot and a right foot, based on its molecular structure. What are the Two Types of Delta 10 THC?
We said that the two versions of delta 10 that exist are sort of like a right foot and a left foot. They are technically the same thing, but the molecules are arranged in just a slightly different way that changes their chemical structure. So, why does this matter?
Well, to fully understand, you have to see the cannabinoid receptors to which delta 10 bonds as shoes. A shoe will only fit a left foot or a right foot – it cannot be compatible with two differently shaped feet. So, early research theorized that one form of delta-10 is capable of binding with its desired cannabinoid receptors (fitting into the shoe) than the other. And, if a cannabinoid does not bind properly to a cannabinoid receptor, in theory, it’s as good as useless, since its properties are derived from this unique binding process.

Delta 10 (6aR,9R) is a stereoisomer, as is the second type of delta 10. Steroisomers are essentially micro-isomers within individual compounds. As isomers, both (6aR,9R) and (6aR,9S), which we will be explaining next, are enormously similar, just like two feet are made up of the same components and fulfill the same role.
If we are still using the foot theory, then this particular form of delta 10 has what’s known as a cis orientation, meaning that it has, let’s say, two left feet within the compound.

delta 10 (6aR,9S) molecularly behaves like a pair of feet, with one left and one right. This is known as a trans configuration, and while it reflects the human body’s natural symmetry, does not necessarily mean that it’s what we are looking for.
Which of the Two Types of Delta 10 THC is More Effective?
As it turns out, delta 10 (6aR,9S) does not seem to create an intoxicating effect of any kind, like its sister stereoisomer, delta 10 (6aR,9R). Now, this is based on one single study in which both forms of delta 10 THC were administered to pigeons. This means that as of now, no humans have taken part in any study in which they take each form of delta-10 and compare the effects.
What this means is that in theory, the effects that we associate with delta 10, such as a mild high and mood lift, come from the (6aR,9R) version of the cannabinoid. Now, does that mean that the other version of delta 10 is useless? We don’t know.
The only trait that was tested in the study we discussed above was its ability to produce an intoxicating effect. Qualities that were not measured were changes in sleep, mood, energy levels, focus, pain and other properties that we associate with cannabinoids. So, here’s where things get confusing. Either these two cannabinoids belong together, as they split the two properties of the cannabinoid, or only the (6aR,9R) version of delta 10 is actually producing any kind of effects.
Now, given what we said earlier about cannabinoid receptors acting like shoes, some might say that this study proves that (6aR,9R) “fits into” CB1 receptors, and the other does not. The reality is that there is still a lot to learn about delta 10, so we have yet to have the privilege of observing numerous studies showing its very precise interaction with the endocannabinoid system.
