What is Delta 6 THC?

Delta 6 THC is one of the rarest cannabinoids at the moment.  Not to be confused with delta 6a10a THC, aka delta 3 THC, delta 6 is a naturally occurring compound in the hemp plant.  While we know some very basic information about it, there is still a lot to learn, as you are about to find out for yourself.

Delta 6 THC Basics 101

Delta 6-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 6 THC) is an extremely rare cannabinoid that occurs only in very trace levels in cannabis.  But, like all cannabinoids, it’s an isomer of CBD, which allows it to be produced using the isomerization process – rearranging the molecular structure of CBD to convert it into delta 6 THC.

To date, there’s only one published paper about delta 6 THC.  There isn’t even a good source for information about the nature of its chemical structure.

Can Delta 6 THC Get Me High?

Delta 6-tetrahydrocannabinol is a THC cannabinoid, so doesn’t that mean it’s inherently psychoactive?  Well, not necessarily.  Yes, the majority of cannabinoids that happen to have “THC” in their name are intoxicating.  But, there are exceptions to that rule – take THC-C, for instance, which is completely non-psychoactive.  Delta 6 may be intoxicating, but we just don’t have that information.  Thus far, no researcher has tested the cannabinoid for psychoactive activity, and so we just don’t know.

Couple that with the fact that delta 6 THC products aren’t actually available just yet, and we really have no references out there about whether or not the cannabinoid can get you high.  As a sidenote, keep in mind that some products you encounter that say “delta 6” in the name are actually delta 6a10a products if you read the details more carefully.  Technically, delta 6a10a should be called “delta 3” rather than “delta 6”, but some companies aren’t making that distinction, which may confuse you.

Does Delta 6 THC Have Any Potential Benefits?

There has been one study demonstrating the potential of this cannabinoid, and the results do seem very promising.  Published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology back in 2018, the study showed evidence that delta 6 THC may act as an anti-inflammatory and an anxiolytic, as the cannabinoid was tested on mice.  Naturally, more research is needed before we can have a broader idea of the cannabinoid’s potential benefits, but these results are not surprising, as many cannabinoids offer both of these properties.

What Kinds of Delta 6 THC Products are on the Market?

At the time of this article being published, there is a very limited selection of delta 6 products on the market.  However, that’s going to change soon, since real interest in delta 6 THC in general is expanding at an immense rate, and manufacturers will undoubtedly respond to the demand with new formulas to try.

Now, given how delta 6 THC, like all cannabinoids, can exist in distillate form, the cannabinoid can be used to produce any formula that we’re already familiar with – gummies, tinctures, flower, concentrates, and so on.  But, it’s likely that the first delta 6 products we’ll see will be vapes, as vapes are the most in-demand product type for THC cannabinoids.

Is Delta 6 THC Actually Legal?

Delta 6 THC is a legal cannabinoid under federal law due to its compliance with the 2018 Farm Bill, which federally legalized all hemp derivatives that contain a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC.  However, within the last couple of years, several states have decided to make all THC isomers illegal.

Meaning. whether or not delta 6 proves to be intoxicating, it’s almost definitely considered illegal in:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Washington

Can I Get Side Effects from Delta 6 THC?

No naturally occurring cannabinoids in hemp have been found to be toxic in any way, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t possible side effects.  Side effects associated with cannabinoids are mild and short-lived, and include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Paranoia/anxiety (if the cannabinoid is psychoactive)
  • Increased appetite
  • Grogginess/drowsiness
  • Confusion

We don’t know if delta 6 THC may cause any of these side effects, but as they’re associated with virtually all other cannabinoids out there, it’s best to assume that these side effects are a possibility.  And, as is always the case, the potential for side effects is largely associated with how much you take, and what your tolerance is to cannabis.

Delta 6 THC: Coming to the Market Soon

There’s little information out there about delta 6 THC, but before long, we’ll know a lot more about it as it makes its way onto the market.  Clearly, all cannabinoids in hemp can bring something valuable into our lives, as we’ve seen time and time again.  So, while we may not know exactly what delta 6 is capable of yet, we can safely assume that it has plenty to offer, and is wholly worth exploring in various product forms.  Stay tuned, because delta 6 will be expanding soon at Binoid.
