The Basic Answer: It All Depends

Whether or not you get an aftertaste from a delta 9 product depends on a number of factors, such as the following:

Factor #1: Terpenes

Products that contain terpenes can give you an aftertaste that’s “plant-like” as these are naturally occurring compounds in hemp.  Many people get an aftertaste from full and broad spectrum THC products in general.  Products that don’t contain terpenes don’t have this flavor since cannabinoids themselves do not carry flavor molecules.  Products that typically contain terpenes include vapes, tinctures, concentrates and, of course, flower.

Factor #2: Solvent Residue

If you get a chemical aftertaste, especially one that tastes like butane, that can mean that the company you bought the delta 9 from uses poor extraction methods, or simply doesn’t purify their concentrates after concentrating them.  Solvents are used in various extraction techniques, but they should be removed once the product is prepared for formulation.

Factor #3: Those Other Ingredients

It’s if the aftertaste is bad that you might want to consider that the product you have is low in quality.  If the aftertaste tastes like chemicals, for example, or has a burnt taste, that can mean the product was produced poorly (for vapes, you might have burnt the vape oil by taking too long of a draw, or even overheating the coil).

What to Do if Your New Federally Compliant Delta 9 Product Comes with an Unwanted Aftertaste

First, you always want to ensure that you’re buying from a reputable and trustworthy company.  Companies that have lots of bad reviews are more likely to produce products using cheap methods that can lead to a poor aftertaste, such as using low-quality solvent-based extraction methods that leave a chemical-like flavor in the product.  Besides that, companies can use poor ingredients in their flavored products that just don’t taste pleasant at all.

If your product does have a bad aftertaste, read the ingredients list carefully to try to isolate what could be causing it.  If it’s a product that contains only hemp, like a dab or vape oil, and the aftertaste isn’t that of the natural flavor of hemp, then assume that the product was extracted using cheap methods, which could also mean that the compounds themselves are low in quality, in that they lack purity.
