How to Read a THC-B Cannabinoid Lab Report

The Importance of Third-Party Testing 

Without a doubt, lab-testing is an absolutely critical part of being a manufacturer of cannabinoid products.  It’s not only a standard practice in the industry, but it’s actually legally required.  Federal law (2018 Farm Bill) states that all hemp products can only contain a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC to be legal, and the only way for a company to prove that this is the case is by submitting batches of their hemp extracts to an unbiased, state-licensed third-party testing facility, where it’s thoroughly analyzed.

Lab-testing doesn’t just look for proof of federal compliance.  It looks at all kinds of aspects of tetrahydrocannabutol extract, including its purity, and whether or not it’s been contaminated, to show that it’s safe for human consumption. 

A company can promise that they offer the purest, highest-quality THC-B possible, but ultimately, the only way to know for sure is to look at the lab report.  Not to mention, if a company isn’t making their lab reports available to customers, this is a red flag, since it usually means that there is something about the company’s THC-B that they don’t want you to know.

How to Find the Third-Party Lab Report 

A hemp company should really strive to make it as easy as possible for you to find their lab reports through their website.  You will find this lab report either on a product’s description page, or on a separate page where each lab report is listed in one location.  Each individual THC-B product should have its own lab report, so that you can find the specific product you plan to buy and learn about its THC-B distillate.

Should a company not make their lab reports easy to access, you can always contact the company and ask for them.  Just bear in mind that some companies require that you scan a QR code on the physical product’s label to access that product’s lab report.

Making Sure the Lab Report is Authentic 

Believe it or not, some manufacturers try to get away with using  fake lab reports, either copied from the lab report of another brand or doctored in some way.  So, the first thing to search for in a lab report is proof that it’s authentic.

All lab reports should contain the name of the laboratory somewhere, along with a reference number.  Initially, look up the name of the lab, to make sure that it’s a real laboratory.  If you want more assurance, you can contact the lab and give them the reference number to make sure that the report is legitimate. 

What You Should Be Looking for in a Lab Report 

In most cases, a THC-B lab report will be made up of two individual documents.  The first document is a more concise overview of the breakdown of chemical compounds in the distillate, as well as its purity level, and the amount of delta 9 THC that exists in the end result, which has implications on the product’s legality. 

Tetrahydrocannabutol should always be the dominant chemical compound in the product, making up as much of the extract as possible.  For instance, if the THC-B is diluted with delta 8, you’ll find this out by quickly glancing at the lab report.  Remember, you will never find a 100% pure THC-B distillate.  How come?  Well, because that’s physically impossible.  Essentially, there will always be trace amounts of other hemp compounds in the final product.

Then comes the longer document, which offers more detailed information regarding the distillate.  This document illustrates whether or not it contains any contaminants like toxins, microbes, etc., as well as impurities like solvents (which can indicate that the extraction method was inferior).  It’ll likely also give you a more detailed breakdown of each chemical compound in the product.

Can the Product Type Make a Difference?

One thing to keep in mind is that should there be a separate lab report for each THC-B product, you need to know that each lab report may look different based on the product’s formula. 

Let’s elaborate: 

Vapes: Vape oils, which are found in both cartridges and disposables, are supposed to contain 100% pure hemp compounds with no other ingredients.  So, the percentage of THC-B should be very high – 85%-95% or so of the entire formula.  And, the milligram amount should be somewhere between 850mg-950mg, making up a full gram (1,000mg) cartridge.  The remaining amount should be terpenes.        

Edibles: Edibles, unlike vapes, are not made up of 100% pure hemp since they contain a number of ingredients.  The number of milligrams of THC-B reported on the lab sheet should match the amount advertised.  For instance, if you have THC-B gummies that say they contain 25mg per piece, the lab report should show 25mg of THC-B.  

Tinctures: The lab report of a tincture should reflect the total amount of milligrams of THC-B advertised on the product’s label, since tinctures only contain THC-B distillate and a carrier oil.
