THCM has made its way onto the hemp market, and there’s still a lot that we don’t know about this hemp derivative. Perhaps the most mysterious and unique of all cannabis byproducts, it’s most commonly found in vaping products, in combination with other popular cannabinoids like THC-P, delta 8 THC, and many more.
But, what is this cannabinoid, where does it come from, and what kind of effects can it offer? We’re going to take a look at THCM in detail, and compare it to another relative newcomer, Delta 7 THC.
As of now, we don’t actually know about THCM’s psychoactive properties. Whether or not the cannabinoid is intoxicating has yet to be confirmed, but one thing that we do know is that if it is psychoactive, the effects are likely to be extremely mild. And, without knowing whether or not it’s psychoactive, we don’t know if the potential high would be more euphoric, uplifting, sedating, etc.
THCM is extremely rare on the market right now, and for the time-being, we’ve only seen it in vaping products, in combination with other cannabinoids that do deliver well-known psychoactive effects. Because of that, it’s clear that at least for now, THCM’s purpose is to potentiate the effects of other cannabinoids, and enhance the entourage effect.
THCM is, in fact, a legal cannabinoid according to federal law, when it comes from the hemp plant, because of the Farm Bill, which passed in 2018, and legalized any hemp product that contains a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC. THCM may sound a lot like delta 9 THC in its name, but ultimately, it’s a different compound.
One thing that you need to know, however, is that 19 states have banned all THC cannabinoids, and THCM would fall into that category. So, you should assume that THCM is illegal in:
Delta 7 THC is a semi-synthesized cannabinoid, meaning that structural changes are made to delta 9 cannabinoid through a series of chemical reactions to alter its properties. It’s not commercially available as of now because the process of making it is difficult and expensive. It was created by cannabis researchers to test the effects of exposing delta 9 THC to this chemical process, and was not initially developed for commercial use.
Delta 7 THC is not psychoactive, which is rare for a THC cannabinoid. It doesn’t cause intoxication, but it does appear to have a very relaxing effect on the body, while the mind remains completely clear.
Delta 7 THC is probably going to be a popular option among those looking for physical relaxation, due to tension, spasms, and other forms of physical discomfort. It cannot get a person intoxicated, but it can offer relief to the body.
Delta 7 THC is legal for the same reason as THCM, in accordance with the 2018 Farm Bill, and it is also banned in all of the same states as THCM.
THCM and delta 7 THC are two of the hardest cannabinoids to compare to one another, because they may very well be the two derivatives of hemp that we know the least about. But, we’re pretty sure that’s going to change in the near future, with growing interest in both of them increasing, which means more incentive to really study what they’re each capable of.
