THCM and THC-P sound like they have a lot more in common with another than they actually do. THC-P is a cannabinoid that’s been out for a while now – maybe a year or longer since it was widely available on the hemp market – while THCM is one of the least understood components of cannabis.
However, we do know enough to be able to compare them to one another, to see how they differ from each other, and what they might potentially have in common.
Actually, we don’t know about THCM’s psychoactive properties. Whether or not the cannabinoid is intoxicating has yet to be confirmed, but one thing that we do know is that if it is psychoactive, the effects are likely to be extremely mild. And, without knowing whether or not it’s psychoactive, we don’t know if the potential high would be more euphoric, energizing, calming, etc.
THCM is barely existent on the market currently, and for the time-being, we’ve only seen it in vaping products, in combination with other cannabinoids that do deliver well-known psychoactive effects. Because of that, it’s clear that at least for now, THCM’s purpose is to potentiate, aka boost, the effects of other cannabinoids, and enhance the entourage effect.
THCM is, in fact, a legal cannabinoid according to federal law, when it comes from the hemp plant, because of the Farm Bill, which was passed in 2018, and legalized any hemp product that contains a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC. THCM may sound a lot like delta 9 THC in its name, but ultimately, it’s a different compound.
One thing that you need to know, however, is that 19 states have banned all THC cannabinoids, and THCM would fall into that category. So, you should assume that THCM is illegal in:
THC-P, aka tetrahydrocannabiphorol, is a cannabinoid that was isolated only in late 2019, which means that we’re still learning a lot about it as we go. But, unlike THCM, THC-P has been studied by cannabis researchers, and so we actually know a lot more about its nature, its chemical structure, and its potential benefits. THC-P has seven carbon atoms on its alkyl side chain, which makes it extremely potent compared to other cannabinoids.
THC-P is recognized as being the most intoxicating cannabinoid naturally present in cannabis, as researchers have found it to be about 10 times as intoxicating as delta 9 THC. The cannabinoid attaches to CB1 receptors at 31-33 times the rate of delta 9, explaining its uniquely strong high. The high is often described as extremely euphoric and uplifting, with a body high that makes the muscles feel relaxed. Still, the high may be slightly less potent than THCM’s – ultimately, we need more data to confirm whether or not that’s the case.
THC-P is mainly considered a recreational cannabinoid because of its very powerful and euphoric high. But, at the same time, the cannabinoid does offer some valuable potential therapeutic properties that are worth exploring as well.
THC-P, like THCM, is federally legal because of the 2018 Farm Bill. But, as it’s also a THC cannabinoid, it’s illegal in the same 19 states as THCM.
THCM and THC-P have the difference of one letter in their name, but as you can see, it’s very likely that they each produce wildly unique experiences from one another. And, you now know that taking them together would likely boost THC-P’s already powerful high.
The key is to keep an eye out for THCM, because it’s likely going to get very popular in the near future, offering a whole new way to experience our favorite cannabinoids, and possibly be very useful on its own.
